Cover Battles: Nine Inch Nails v Johnny Cash – “Hurt” Edition

By: Steve Newman

WARNING: If you’re coming off a weekend full of binge drinking and you’re currently sitting in your cube/office, don’t listen to these songs, especially if you work in a skyscraper.

Today, we’ll be analyzing the song “Hurt,” originally performed by Nine Inch Nails in 1994. We’ve got some pretty intense lyrics here, but it makes for a great song. In this blog, the boys from Nine Inch Nails will be taking on a titan of the industry, the man in black himself, Johnny Cash. Let’s go.

The Original

If you just listened to that Nine Inch Nails version, try your best to put down the bottle of Nembutal and get back to those spreadsheets.

p.s. we included the live version because it’s a little easier to follow than studio recording.

The Cover

However, listen to the man in black’s version and you’ll feel fucking awesome, even though you probably shouldn’t feel awesome because the lyrics are insanely bleak. It’s a like a juice cleanse for the ears.

Verdict: Yeah, the Cash version is better, unless you just watched your puppy get ran over by an old hag driving a 20 year old Buick…then throw on some Nine Inch Nails. Gotta be tough to be a member of Nine Inch Nails and know that one of the most legendary artists of all time covered your song and made it way better. Good try boys. Let’s all try to enjoy this Monday.

  1. Nine Inch Nails isn’t a band it’s made up of one person named Trent Reznor, who also now scores movies such as The Social Network, the Girl with The Dragon Tattoo etc etc. And he came out and transferred all the rights to the song over to Johnny Cash and his family, Trent Reznor is quoted as saying it is not his song anymore, which i think is AWESOME.. Good blog and good choice of song, IMO the best cover song of all time
