Koby Altman May Have Just Saved The Cavs With The Kyrie Trade
By: Alex Marcheschi
The reports of the imminent death of the Cavaliers may have been greatly exaggerated. Newly hired Cavs GM Koby Altman swooped down from the heavens and made the greatest possible Kyrie trade available. He dealt Kyrie for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the coveted 2018 first round Brooklyn pick, which is unprotected. It was a haul, and it means one thing: Danny Ainge thinks Kyrie is capable of putting up James Harden numbers, and there’s no reason to think he’s wrong. Kyrie was tired of playing second fiddle to LeBron, he’s seen the money Harden and Steph just got and he wants to prove he’s on their level. I can’t blame him at all.
From a Cavs perspective, it obviously sucks to lose Kyrie, he’s a generational talent with the best handles in the league and an unmatched ability to finish at the rim. He’s better than IT by a landslide. However, the Cavs needed depth, trade ammo and a better starting point guard than D Rose. They got all of that in this trade. Dwyane Wade tweeted the emoji eyes before this deal was even reported, so that means he’s in the loop. He’s going to get bought out by the Bulls and join the Cavs at some point before the trade deadline.
I can’t stress how big securing this Brooklyn pick is for the Cavs, in a perfect world it could keep LeBron in Cleveland. The Nets will be terrible, and that pick will be extremely valuable. Depending on how things go early on, they could trade the pick before the trade deadline next year and add another huge piece in an attempt to go get another ring. There are already rumors that the Pelicans would gladly trade Demarcus Cousins for the pick if things continue to go downhill with their big man experiment. Cousins has one more year on his deal and if it’s clear that he’s not going to re-sign in New Orleans, they would take the pick for Boogie and hope for a generational talent in the draft.
So, there’s a chance that this trade leads to the addition of IT, Crowder, Ante Zizic (who’s no throw in by the way, this dude is young, skilled and oozing with potential)…
D Wade and another star like Boogie Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, DeAndre Jordan or any other embattled star who might be worth moving in a few months here. If the Cavs make these moves and somehow beat the Warriors in the Finals, this could change everything. D Wade and LeBron could team up again in The Land and lure in talent to ensure that they continue to reach the Finals until they retire. The Celtics are no joke now, and they will be tough to fend off, but as long as Lebron is on the Cavs I’ll take them over Boston every time.
Before this deal, it was a forgone conclusion that LeBron was leaving, now that idea has been shelved for the time being. Securing a defender of Crowder’s status was huge, they can put him on KD now and LeBron will be able to have more energy. The reason the Cavs got smoked in The Finals is because they had no depth. When LeBron sat, they got toasted. Now, the Cavs will likely have these additional pieces to go at the Warriors: Isaiah Thomas, D Rose, D Wade, Jeff Green, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, Cedi Osman, Jose Calderon and potentially Demarcus Cousins. Who knows, they could even potentially use the pick to unite Melo with his boys. This deal changed everything for the Cavs, yes losing Kyrie hurts, but if he had to go this was the best solution to the problem. Bravo Koby, Bravo.
